I am trying to play Chrono Cross but am running into varied glitches depending on my settings. The game is still playable, but the glitches are annoying and I would like to resolve them if possible.Setting #1I followed the settings from this YouTube video, This setup includes using the custom shaders shown in the video and linked to in the notes. The problem with this setup is that about 80% of the time when I enter a battle the music will stutter for 3-4 seconds before it stabilizes. The music will also become incredibly choppy if the visuals onscreen are very complex (this only happened at one point in the game so far, during the vision sequence at the Viper Manor). Finally, when using menus there is heavily distorted 'blips' of music that interject randomly.
First, do not use alternative plugins in ePSXe 2.0.5. There is no reason not to use ePSXe SPU Core with this game.second, use real BIOS (scph1001.bin or scph7502.bin - just one, and only one for all games, no need to change).third, while your graphics card is relatively good, it will not necessarily run all existing shaders. Disable shader effects for further testing.fourth, 'Use FPS limit' + 'Auto-detect FPS/Frame skipping limit' works.
You don't need to do it manually.and fifth, you may have more successful graphics improvements using Beetle PSX HW¹ on the RetroArch frontend.¹ multi-disc games in the mednafen family emulators (beetle included) must be run through a.m3u file, which is a plain text file, and which contains in order and one by line the full name of the multi-disc.cue files. (scares the first time, but it's quite simple.) also there is another format, multi-disc games can be played on RetroArch Beetle PSX (HW) and ePSXe through a single PBP file.
(which may be easier for some, though. The format slightly degrades the sound quality. Not that this is relevant to the player, but makes the file non-restoreable to the original lossless format.)some Windows 10 users complain about poor ePSXe performance and I still can't figure out why. The vast majority of brazilians I have helped use W10 and none have ever had the poor performance I see expressed on the internet.even this game was already played on Twitch by a personal friend of mine using ePSXe, native plugins and Windows 10. Thanks for the detailed response! I tried most of your suggestions but, unfortunately, I still have the same issues. Here's a breakdown:'first, do not use alternative plugins in ePSXe 2.0.5.
There is no reason not to use ePSXe SPU Core with this game.' I tried going back to the ePSXe SPU Core but the music was popping/cracking every few seconds like before. I don't know how to address this without using the plugin.' Second, use real BIOS (scph1001.bin or scph7502.bin - just one, and only one for all games, no need to change).'
Was already using this BIOS; sorry for not specifying earlier.' Third, while your graphics card is relatively good, it will not necessarily run all existing shaders. Disable shader effects for further testing.' Fourth, 'Use FPS limit' + 'Auto-detect FPS/Frame skipping limit' works. You don't need to do it manually.'
And fifth, you may have more successful graphics improvements using Beetle PSX HW¹ on the RetroArch frontend.' I didn't know exactly what you meant here. Isn't RetroArch a different emulator? I'm not that savvy with emulators and this seemed rather complicated, so I skipped this.'
Epsxe Chrono Cross Problem
Try threading mode: 2: 2-threads (effects); it is usually safe'This seemed to halve the speed of both the visuals and the sound. Major lag, making the game unplayable.' Try Gfx card vram: 128 MB; it is usually safe for iGPUstry Off-Screen drawing: 1: Standard - Ok for most games; it is usually safetry Framebuffer effects: 2: Standard - Emulates frame textures and buffer moves/reads; it is usually safetry disable Shader Effects; it is always safe'I didn't notice any differences when applying these settings. The main suggestion of yours that I didn't try was switching from the GL2 core to the GPU core.
Worth trying?I reverted back to the 'Nice' settings but disabled shaders. Am still experiencing these problems:'In this setup I get none of the music stuttering during the battle transitions and none of the blip interjections over menus. But when the screen transitions in any way - such as when entering a new room or entering into a cutscene - about 70% of the time the music will cut out and the gameclock speed will shift into hypergear. The only way to negate the effect is by pausing the game or entering a menu.' The music will also become incredibly choppy if the visuals onscreen are very complex 'Not sure of where to go from here. It's this kind of problem that I mentioned earlier that I only read happening over the internet, but no remote or physical machine I had access presented.thank you very much for the feedback!and it's also the first case that I remember not having a NVIDIA GPU, but Intel iGPU.I believe it to be similar problem to unresolved topic:EDIT: the next message has a more likely suspect!'

And the opposite happens in your scenario.another interesting feature is that the same problem does not occur on Windows 7 installed on the same machine! With a few small adjustments.Actually, the only real adjustment I had to make here was the audio.
SPU Core still not working without the constant cracking, so I went with the plugin I had been using. Seems to work fine with this setup. All your other suggested settings seem to have worked magic. Resolution x2 combined with the shader you suggested I download improved the graphics beyond where I was at previously. The text boxes, in particular, were crystal clear. Interestingly, without Resolution x2 the graphics were probably the worst I've seen while playing Chrono Cross on the ePSXe.And, best of all: no more audio cutting out and unwanted hyperdrive speed! The only weird thing I noticed with this new setup is that when in fullscreen mode the window is slightly aligned to the top of the screen rather than the middle. I play on an HDTV via HDMI, and this creates an effect of having a bunch of black padding on the bottom of the screen and little at the top.
It's not a huge deal, especially relative to the other issues we've been talking about, but I have no idea why it is top-aligning now rather than middle-aligning.Thank you both for all your help with this. It has been invaluable!

It has been invaluable! Well as they say whatever works, but these are definitely not compatibility issues as on my 5 year old pc with a dedicated graphic card I can use the opengl2 plugin with everything maxed at 4k with no issues. As for the alignment issue, you would have to mess around with overscan settings or stretching, these black bars are in-game and were meant to be hidden in the portion of the screen that is outside of the screen, it's called overscan it is something that CRT TVs did and HD TVs stopped doing. Some games don't have these black bars as their resolution aligned better with the TVs resolution.
Since I had to search for a working setting for ages, and the solution is nowhere to be found on the net, I'm posting my configuration here. This is a configuration for ePSXe v.1.6.0, installed on Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick. I am running Chrono Cross from an bin/cue file. The plugins can easily be found on the net.The 30FPS were pretty crucial for me, because the game was running too fast when this limit wasn't set. I only used one game fix, obviously the one for Chrono Cross.Last edited by FelixVdJ; February 16th, 2011 at 11:47 PM.Reason: Adding more details.
